Dental crowns

A crown restores the natural appearance and function of a damaged, broken or unattractive tooth. We make it in our own digital laboratory – often in a single day.

What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns – also known as caps – are restorations that cover the entire visible part of a tooth. They are permanently fixed to a prepared tooth or to an implant and protect it from further damage.

A crown is most often recommended for teeth with extensive decay or a large filling, after root canal treatment, for broken or worn teeth, and for cosmetic reasons – when the colour, shape or position of a tooth has changed.

Types of crowns

  • Zirconia crowns – exceptional strength and natural aesthetics, for front and back teeth, crowns on implants and bridges. Our premium way of crafting restorations in full zirconia is SaraMax Premium.
  • All-ceramic crowns – the most natural light transmission, especially for front teeth.
  • Metal-ceramic crowns – a cobalt-chromium alloy base with a ceramic surface; a strong solution, now used less often in the visible part of the smile.

The procedure

  1. 01

    Specialist consultation

An examination of your mouth, a conversation about what you would like to achieve and, if needed, an X-ray or 3D CBCT scan – all in the clinic, in one place. Based on this, you receive a treatment plan and a quote.

  2. 02

    Tooth preparation

The tooth is reshaped and prepared for the crown under local anaesthetic.

  3. 03

    Digital impression

Instead of conventional impression putty, the tooth is scanned and the data goes straight to our laboratory.

  4. 04

    Design and fabrication

The dental technician designs the crown in software, and it is then made in the laboratory.

  5. 05

    Try-in and cementation

We check the shape, colour and bite, then fix the crown permanently.

How long do crowns last and how do you care for them?

How long a crown lasts depends on the material, your bite, your habits (such as teeth grinding) and your oral hygiene. You brush a crown just like a natural tooth and clean between the teeth with floss or interdental brushes. Check-ups make it possible to spot any problem at the edge of the crown or on the gums in good time.

Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

Which crown should I choose – zirconia or ceramic?

It depends on the position of the tooth, your bite and your aesthetic expectations. All-ceramic crowns offer the most natural light transmission, while zirconia offers exceptional strength. After your examination, the dentist will recommend a material and explain the differences.

Is preparing the tooth painful?

The tooth is prepared under local anaesthetic, so it should not be painful. Afterwards the tooth may be more sensitive to hot and cold for a short time.

Can a crown be placed on an implant?

Yes. We make crowns for implants in the same laboratory, most often in zirconia.
