Zirconia crowns

Zirconia combines strength and aesthetics: it withstands chewing forces, contains no metal and leaves no dark line at the gum. We design and make every crown in our own laboratory in Sarajevo.

Why zirconia?

Zirconia is a ceramic material with exceptional strength and good biocompatibility. It contains no metal, so there is no grey shimmer or dark line at the gum, and when properly finished it closely matches the colour of a natural tooth. That is why it is used both for back teeth, where chewing forces are greatest, and for visible teeth, where aesthetics are paramount.

Zirconia is also a common choice for crowns on implants, bridges and more extensive restorations where stability is important.

SaraMax Premium – zirconia crowns from our laboratory

SaraMax Premium is Saradent's own brand: our way of crafting premium restorations in full zirconia. It brings together high-quality zirconia materials, digital planning, precise fabrication and an individual design for every crown – all in our own dental laboratory. SaraMax is not a zirconia manufacturer but our standard of craftsmanship. More about SaraMax Premium.

How a zirconia crown is made in our laboratory

  1. 01

    Digital impression

The prepared tooth is scanned; the data goes straight to the laboratory, with no impressions to send.

  2. 02

    CAD design

The dental technician designs the crown in software – according to your bite, your neighbouring teeth and the shape of your smile.

  3. 03

    Milling

The crown is milled from a zirconia block on a CAD/CAM milling machine.

  4. 04

    Sintering

The zirconia is fired in a sintering furnace, where it gains its final strength.

  5. 05

    Finishing

The dental technician gives the crown its final colour and lustre – for SaraMax Premium work using our SaraMax process, a laboratory signature we keep to ourselves.

  6. 06

    Try-in and fitting

The shape, colour and bite are checked in the treatment room, followed by permanent cementation.

Zirconia or all-ceramic crown?

  • Zirconia – greater strength; better suited to back teeth, teeth grinding, bridges and restorations on implants.
  • All-ceramic crown – the highest light transmission; often the first choice for individual front teeth.
  • Both materials are sometimes combined within one smile. The dentist makes a recommendation after your examination.

Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

How long do zirconia crowns last?

How long they last depends on your bite, habits such as teeth grinding and your oral hygiene – not just on the material. With regular check-ups and good hygiene, zirconia crowns are a long-lasting solution.

Do zirconia crowns look natural?

Yes – zirconia contains no metal, so there is no dark line or grey shimmer. We match the colour and shape to your neighbouring teeth and your smile.

What is SaraMax Premium?

SaraMax Premium is our own brand – our way of crafting premium full-zirconia restorations in the Saradent laboratory, with digital planning and an individual design for every crown.

Can zirconia crowns be placed on implants?

Yes, zirconia is a common choice for crowns and bridges on implants.

How many visits are needed?

Usually two to three: the examination and tooth preparation, followed by the try-in and cementation. When conditions allow, turnaround times are considerably shorter thanks to our own laboratory.
